Bridgett: But we can’t escape the heat. Summer’s a good time for beach getaway, some relaxing and unwinding.
Julie: Yeah. It’s a time to let go of the old and have a little bit of a life cleanse and a summer mindset. So joining us now, Dr. Brooke Stuart of holistic counseling, acupuncture, and functional medicine. Welcome back. We’re so happy to have you with this, on a Friday. So it’s summer. You know, talking about a life cleanse, what do we mean by a life cleanse, kind of getting rid of things that don’t serve us and making room for new things?
Brooke: Absolutely. When we think about cleansing our lives, there’s so much that we can evaluate. We can look at mindset, diet, lifestyle, and environment, all of these different facets that make up our life experience can be important in terms of optimizing health, but also just enjoying the experience in and of itself.
Bridgett: So what do you do? Why is it a good time in the summertime to think about those types of things?
Brooke: Absolutely. So summer is such a light time of year. It’s such a fun time of year. You know, we think about dancing, sweating, kind of like a lightness. There’s a heat to it, especially being here in Florida. Right? And there’s simple things that in terms of detoxing, some alludes to, and I think this is when a lot of people get caught up in wellness craze like juice cleanse. Because it is refreshing, it is enjoyable, but there’s definitely more that we can do that can accelerate results that extend far beyond just the vicious cycle of often that shiny object syndrome.
Julie: Right. So what are some simple steps that maybe we can incorporate? Because I know you mentioned a juice cleanse sounding fun, that doesn’t sound fun to me. Depends on what the juice tastes like.
Bridgett: Yeah. It depends on what you put in that juice, I guess.
Julie: But what are some simple steps that we can incorporate?
Brooke: Absolutely. So something that I love to teach my patients is just drinking two full glasses of water in the morning. Maybe adding lemon throughout the day to kind of flush out the system and detox and then sip for hydration throughout the day. That can be really helpful. Even something as simple as putting your feet in the sand, enjoying time with your family, organizing your pantry, reviewing health, and beauty products, and trying to avoid excess chemicals, like in sunscreen at times. Things like that can all be really helpful.
Julie: And so what is it, you mentioned putting your feet in the sand, you know, sometimes it’s just nice to, you know, make that contact with the earth. Absolute. Absolutely. You know, what is it that is so healing about that?
Brooke: You know, there’s a whole field of science called ecotherapy and it talks about how just connecting to nature and being immersed in the sun is so detoxifying and of itself too, but all aspects of nature can really connect us to the earth of course, but it also helps to immediately shift the stress response. There’s been really interesting studies that talk about children going camping and it having results in it, and a positive influence and treating things like ADHD and helping to stabilize mood, so it’s a very interesting topic.
Bridgett: Yeah. It’s, it’s amazing when you think about how different people are outside versus indoors and just getting out. So maybe not a beach person, maybe you like to hike or maybe you like to garden, but just getting some air and of course, drinking lots of water Yes. In that heat can be good for you. Definitely. And vitamin D.
Brooke: Yes, the vitamin D, that completely helps to heal the immune system so it’s a great thing to do.
Bridgett: And you mentioned supplements as well, can you share with us some of those ideas and, and how that could maybe help give you a boost?
Brooke: Sure. So I love things like milk this little to help to detox the liver. There’s other things that are even more simpler in nature. Simple in nature in terms of how can we optimize sleep. Sleep is actually the most detoxifying part but some high doses of magnesium glycinate or even subtle doses can really drive people into that para-sympathetic state where they can actually optimize sleep. And if we think about that, that’s a third of our life back in action. That’s actually when our brain begins to process through the lymphatic system. So there’s so much that we can do to detoxify just through fundamental core lifestyle changes.
Julie: All right. So drink water, throw a little lemon, walk outside with no shoes on, but don’t step on anything.
Bridgett: Get your hands dirty. Sound like a good plan. And Dr. Brooke, it’s always good to have you here.
Brooke: Thank you so much for having me here.
Bridgett: Happy summer!
Brooke: Happy Summer. Yes.
