On Cravings
In this episode of heartbeat, Dr. Brooke Stuart dives into a discussion on cravings. While food can provide a quick fix by stimulating neurochemicals like serotonin and dopamine, it is essential to determine if food is the true source of our cravings through self-study and awareness. For a cravings cheatsheet, check here!
- Cravings: Cravings can be defined, by Oxford Languages, as a yearning for something. In some cases, cravings continue- but when we learn to satiate the need by identifying the root cause, we can understand and unhook them.
- Root Cause: In my practice, I find cravings are less about will power and more of a signal. There are many root causes to cravings including but not limited to: a systemic imbalance, blockage or buildup, micronutrient deficiency, dietary issue, distressed/dysregulated nervous system or a gut health problem.
- Food As A Quick Fix: Food, yes, can be a quick fix- encouraging neurochemical, like serotonin and dopamine, production. However, is food what we are really craving? In order to find out, it is imperative that we self-study by connecting to the process and learning along the way.
- Notice: It’s also important to notice when cravings arise- at night, in the midst of certain pattern, person, experience? Becoming aware can help us understand and pivot.
- Solutions: If you are unsure of where to start, getting on a good multivitamin, balancing out your diet or assessing organ systems and nutrients through lab testing could be a perfect next step!
