Dr. Brooke Stuart discusses the importance of setting realistic goals and making lasting changes by focusing on the why behind resolutions. She emphasizes the need to enjoy and look forward to the changes, as well as reflecting on past pain points to identify untapped potential.

Candace: Well, we’re just about 14 and a half hours away until the start of the new year. Can you feel it? And that means that those New Year’s resolutions will will kick in and not only after midnight.

Bridgett: Yes. And whether you’re interested in a healthier lifestyle or you wanna take up new hobbies, sticking to your New Year’s resolution can be a challenge sometimes.

Candace: Oh, yes. But making a return to the desk today to give us some help is Dr. Brooke Stuart of holistic counseling, acupuncture, and functional medicine. Thank you so much for joining us.

Brooke: Absolutely. I’m so glad to be here.

Bridgett: Yeah. We needed you back. Yes. This is that time of year where this just all comes to the speeding stop and then you start over with the new year.

Candace: So true.

Brooke: Absolutely.  It’s the time of year where people are really evaluating every aspect of their lives from family and finances to health and wellness, to love and relationships, career, and contribution. So it’s a really great time of year to really focus in on lasting change. You know, how we can use the momentum of the new year and really create that lasting change.

Candace: And we were just talking about it in earlier shows, how studies show that people who set fitness goals for New Year’s resolutions, they don’t stick around. Why is that?

Brooke: You know, I think it’s because of how they go into it. I think they go into with a very fear-based mentality or maybe it’s somewhat superficial. They’re doing it for the Instagram instead of for the depth, right? Really thinking about the why, why are you doing this? You know, whether it’s health and longevity or whether it’s confidence, but really going a little bit deeper and making some other changes around how we view our New Year’s resolutions, I think can help to propel it into lasting change.

Bridgett: So what can we do to stick to those goals, whether it be something you wanna do for your health or something you wanna do with your family. How can we set realistic goals and then stick to them for the new year?

Brooke:  I think you just hit the nail on the head when you said realistic. I think that’s really important. So many people go above and beyond and they don’t think about the reality of their situation. I think it’s also very important to think about what you can enjoy, what you can expand into and look forward to.

Something that a lot of people don’t talk about as well is to be able to kind of sit with what hasn’t worked, the pain points. How when we think about resolutions, what do we wanna resolve? What are the vulnerabilities in our life? So if we’re able to kind of sit with those pain points about what hasn’t been working, we can kind of soak that in because that’s where all the untapped potential lies.

And then we can think about the context of our lives and really thinking about, okay, what can I do? What will I look forward to? How can I make this lasting change? How can I get from exactly where I am to where I want to go? And that’s a really important shift. And then expanding into that and getting excited and kind of creating that vision can really set the stage, you know, and bringing a depth to that vision where we have kind of an empowering intention, and then we think about fundamental keys that we can use to really commit to it.


And I like the word intention, to kind of empower resolutions and goals, because I think it allows for focus and flexibility versus like a fixation where we’re constantly disappointed in ourselves. And I think if we go into it thinking about the landscape and how, you know, resolutions in this time of year is it’s a propeller, it’s momentum, right? It’s something that we can really use to capitalize on to create that lasting change versus something that we have to look at as start, stop.

Bridgett: Right. How can you look at like a holistic approach to these, like the health resolutions?

Brooke: Absolutely. So weight loss is such a big one, right? So I think what we wanna think about are just basics. How can we sleep better? How can we eat better? How can we move, play, enjoy our community? How can we support ourselves with those really great books and podcasts and teachers that can empower us? How can we be on our own team and lift ourselves up as we’re making, you know, these changes?

 It takes a lot. We should be proud of ourselves when we’re looking about, really thinking about change and how we can actualize that within the context of our lives and giving ourselves that space and grace.

Bridgett: So not just the gym membership, right? Say the, the mind, the body, the spirit, looking at ways to work on all of that in the year.

Brooke: Absolutely. Absolutely.

Candace: And sometimes it’s hard to tap into more of the what needs to be resolved, as you were saying that, that’s sometimes where you can really propel into something really good. 

Sometimes do you think people maybe should maybe ask their loved ones like, “Hey, what do you think I should maybe work on?” Maybe somebody like your mother or your spouse who give you ideas of things maybe you can work on. I know it might be kind of a touchy subject, but if you think about it, someone who’s looking outside in who knows you most.

Brooke: Absolutely. I think that’s a great idea. And I think the New Year is a great time for conversations like that, that’s a special sort of conversation. It connects you with your loved ones in a different way. It connects you with yourself in a different way. It connects you to the change in a different way. All of that can create that momentum and not just momentum, it can create that change that lasts, which is, is the key of course.

Bridgett: And the support around you is really also very important too.

Brooke: Absolutely. Absolutely. It’s all a journey. And I think that’s the shift, right? Letting go of that stop and go and really looking at it as a journey that we can just continue to better ourselves and improve upon.

Bridgett: We need to keep you around more often.

Candace:  Fall down, get back up, that’s right.

Brooke: Absolutely. Resilience.
