Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is founded on the principle that our emotional well-being is intrinsically linked to physical health, creating an interdependent cycle where each influences the other. In TCM, emotions and thoughts are not just abstract experiences but are closely tied to the health of our organ systems, each of which is associated with specific emotions, elements and diagnostic criteria.
Here is a snippet, as when you dive deep, there are more organ systems associated with each element alongside a deep understanding of how and why certain constellations exist.
Organ System: Liver, Gallbladder, Emotion: Anger, Element: Wood
Organ System: Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium, San Jiao, Emotion: Joy, Element: Fire
Organ System: Spleen, Stomach, Emotion: Worry, Element: Earth
Organ System: Lung, Large Intestine, Emotion: Grief, Element: Metal
Organ System: Kidney, Urinary Bladder, Emotion: Fear, Element: Water
TCM practitioners use various methods, such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, embodiment practices like Qigong, and counseling techniques to harmonize the system and treat the patient. In my practice, I use both Classical and Traditional Chinese Medicine to inform Functional Medicine and vice versa, using these guiding principles to diagnose and treat my patients holistically. Interestingly enough, as a through line, in Chinese medical texts, the heart, is considered the emperor that rules over all systems and emotions that make up the human being while housing the “shen”, which represents the spirit making it poetically a bridge between worlds.
