Creating Better Relationships | WKMG Channel 6 News

In this segment on WKMG channel 6 news, Dr. Brooke Stuart, a holistic and functional medicine doctor,  talks all about how to build up your mind and body to create better relationships. When we build ourselves up, we can enter into our relationships in a way that reflects who we truly are and how we want to show up in the world. For the full segment, you can check out the video above or visit the link here!

Throughout the segment, we discuss mental health and how it relates to better relationships by diving into the following takeaways:

  • bidirectional: mental health impacts relationships and relationships impact mental health, if you picture a healthy person- they have great friendships, confidence, feel comfortable in their own skin, sleep well, are resourceful with energy. This vision can provide a way to move forward and create in the now.
  • it starts with you: the energy you bring into the relationship matters. The better you are, the better your relationships will be and the easier it is to show up, in the present moment, connect and make empowered choices. For example, when you are in a healthy place, it is much easier to give and receive and listen and communicate rather than perpetuate a toxic cycle. It’s easier to interrupt dysfunctional patterns and shift into a new one.
  • back to basics: the fundamentals, such as mindset, diet, lifestyle, are key- here, it is important to focus on what you can do, what you do have and move forward from that place- practical choices like how you perceive the world, what you choose to put into your body and mind all matter.
  • opening up: when you are going through a difficult time, focus on the fundamentals, go back to the basics and open up to the people in your life who are supportive and have your best interest in mind.
  • build: it’s so important to build yourself and others up and to surround yourself with people who do the same!

Kirstin: Every week we discuss important health topics, reminding everyone that their health is important.

Bridgett:  Including Your mental health. And a good way to boost your mental health is by creating better relationships with people.

Julie: So today we’re raising awareness on some proper steps women can take to improve their health. Joining us once again, we’d like to welcome back Dr. Brooke Stuart of holistic counseling, acupuncture, and functional medicine.

So welcome back. We’re so happy to have you, and this is an important topic .I know we are always so busy taking care of everyone else, but one of the first steps in better relationships is taking care of ourselves.

Brooke: Absolutely.

Julie: Why is that?

Brooke: You know, when we are taking care of ourselves, we have so much more to bring to the table. We bring a better energy, we’re full, we’re resourceful. It’s easier to respond to tricky stress-based situations. So the more we build ourselves up, the easier it is to really come to the table in the full expression of who we are and how we wanna show up in the world.

Kirstin: And I know a lot of women will tell you, okay, I’m gonna go get a pedicure and a manicure, and that’s me, you know, working on myself. But I like that you’re talking about some of these other holistic remedies like acupuncture and, um, some things that people may have not tried yet. And why are those important?

Brooke: Definitely. I mean, I think trying new experiences and seeing what works for you is really, really important. But even something as simple as making a dietary shift that feels in line with your belief system and what works for your body.

It’s never just about food, it’s never just about diet. It’s about putting yourself first and kind of bringing in something empowering that can fuel your life. Health in general, it’s not about health. It’s about you being able to show up in your full expression, having radiant energy. If we think about a healthy person, we think about someone who can manage stress, right? Nobody’s stress-free. Stress is synonymous with life experiences and some of the best ones at that, getting that promotion, raising children, having a child, all of these different things.

But when we think of a healthy person, we think of someone who relaxes, who sleeps, who drinks a lot of water, who has a cool workout routine that works for them. A lot of friends, you know, they’re happy at work. So if we can begin to hold that vision within ourselves and work towards that, I think it can make a big impact moving forward. But it’s also just remembering that it’s all for you. It’s not just for the other people in your life. Even though what’s best for you also happens to greatly be best for them as well.

Bridgett: So how do you get out of a rut, if maybe something’s outta whack? How do you identify where the adjustments need to be made and then, you know, get that plan together.

Brooke: Definitely. So if something isn’t working for you, I really view that as all untapped potential. So if we’re able to take a step back and to really look at what isn’t working, and maybe we react, maybe we feel powerless and really moved and contracted and recoiled in certain situations, this is where rather than dividing ourselves and judging it, maybe we wanna bring it to the table, talk to a friend about it, talk to a counselor, whatever feels right to you, someone that you trust and can, that can build you up, that can bring in a new perspective. And just beginning to look at it.

Forming that connection will allow you to begin to move through it in a different way, if that makes sense. But the real thing that’s going on there, and this is what’s most interesting, is it’s a pattern interrupter, right? When we choose to acknowledge and embrace something that’s moving us in our lives, that interrupts the pattern. Now it’s not held within. Now we’re not feeling ashamed about it. And feeling even more contracted and divided from the world, we’re connecting to it. So in that way, we can really begin to move through it, you know?

Julie: And what would you say to somebody who thinks, okay, well, I’m not into counseling, I’m not into acupuncture. You know, I love acupuncture. And sometimes I tell people that and they look at me like I’m crazy. It’s good to try something different, to shift your mindset and shift your energy.

Brooke: Absolutely. So in my practice, a lot of what I do is we’ll talk about the things that aren’t working, but also the things that are bringing in a lot of gratitude. And then at times, and not everybody receives acupuncture, but the people who do, I think just taking that quiet time to themselves, but also doing something that’s really health-promoting for the body that actually releases oxytocin, different endorphins, neurochemicals, that build you up and make it easier to make better choices.

I see it as a perfect segue into the change that they’re looking to make in their lives and within themselves, building that energy, you know.

Kirstin: Count all the gratitude.

Brooke: Yes.

Kirstin: I really like that. Thank you so much, Dr. Brooke Stuart is here with us. We’ll see you again soon.
