Magnesium is a micronutrient, in mineral form, involved in over 300 essential metabolic processes that support energy production, our heartbeat, muscle contraction, blood sugar regulation, nerve signal transmission and the overall build of our body, from hormones to bone health.
Although magnesium can be found in whole foods like: leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale, nuts and seeds particularly cacao, almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds, whole grains such as brown rice and quinoa, legumes like black beans and lentils and fruits like bananas and avocados, evidence confirms that nearly two thirds of people in the western world are still deficient.
Magnesium deficiency can lead to migraines, diabetes, asthma, premenstrual syndrome, preeclampsia, metabolic syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias, depression and more.
In my practice, I often prescribe magnesium glycinate taken at night before bed to relax the system, deepen sleep, improve digestion and elimination and support enzymatic processes as a part of our core protocol. Although, optimizing magnesium levels through supplementation has been well-documented as safe and effective. Make sure to check in with yourself, listen to your body and talk with your provider to identify what could work best for you. Here is a cheat sheet for various types of magnesium highlighting their unique properties, benefits and common uses to get you started!
